Prosecuting the Messenger: Chief Greek Statistician Threatened with Jail

He was hired to bring Greece's debt statistics in line with European norms. Now, chief statistician Andreas Georgiou faces jail time for allegedly producing inflated sovereign debt numbers. He says he was merely being honest, and he has plenty of support in Europe.

Greece is the test bed of how all deficit countries eventually will react – by denial.
It is a walk on a knifes edge to on the one hand make everybody believe in the Euro project, and on the other hand tell the average citizens that they have to suffer deeply for their countries past failures.
The real problem is the flight of jobs, firms and new inventions to the Far East. That is bad for Northern Europe, but willingness to adjust has contained the catastrophe. In southern Europe the implementation of the Euro had the result, that no adjustment or productivity renewal took place resulting in the present catastrophic decline.
It is still not accepted that the economic decline that has hit all the old industrialized countries is the product of the internationalization of their economies, resulting in a gradual deterioration of those economies as the internationalization gained momentum. As long as that is not understood the correct cure cannot be implemented.

I cannot say whether Mr A Georgiou is innocent or guilty. This is being investigated by Greek Justice, needing some respect at least before verdict. I am tired of hearing generic hints meaning "corrupted" Greece, every case has to be specifically investigated without prejudice.
Although I have not known the case in detail, charges are specific and of course complying with EU rules is not a charge. Let Greek Justice speak and give the necessary explanations to judge. Right may not be so apparent.
And of course Mr A Georgiou has all legal means to defend himself or to appeal, even call Mr Walter Radermacher as defense witness.
