Famous German crooner Heino, 74, makes an unlikely rock star, but his new album of cover versions of hard rock, punk and hip-hop hits is breaking sales records. The comeback is a PR stunt, however, and Heino remains faithful to "<i>Schlager</i>" -- a perplexingly enduring genre of folk music in Germany.

Schlager is a crime against culture. No, against humanity. It should be banned. Immediately. Schlager police should roam the streets and arrest anyone found playing it. Form Beethoven to Heino, Germans should be ashamed of themselves.
