Exactly 200 years ago, the Grimm brothers published the first edition of their fairy tales. Many of the originals were brutal and there was no lack of blood, gore and carnality. But thanks to a bit of clean-up work, they have gone on to enrapture people around the world. What is the secret to their success?

I think this article makes some wonderful points. Although English, I've been living in Germany for 20 years, and understand exactly where Kristen Allen is coming from with her desire for more "authentic" adaptations of the Grimms' work.
The first novel in my own Grimm fiction series, DEATH'S APPRENTICE: A GRIMM CITY NOVEL, has just been released by St. Martin's Press in New York. With the series, I've tried very hard to get back to the original power and simplicity of the Grimms' tales, without indulging in any of the insipid “Disneyfication” that has coloured so many Grimm adaptations in the past. The GRIMM CITY series is the first series ever to be based upon the entire Grimm canon. That means it’s based not only upon their well known Märchen, but also upon their other German language collections, including their mostly unknown Deutsche Sagen and essays from Jacob Grimm's German Mythology. Jay Bonansinga, co-author of the WALKING DEAD novels, has described the first book in the series as "a mesmerizing mash-up of classic folklore and post-punk horror-noir that pulses with sex, drugs, and rock and roll ... It manages to both entertain and resonate on the deepest levels of Jungian dream logic – the Grimms would be delighted!" Well, as a deeply committed Brothers Grimm fan myself, that’s exactly the effect I was looking for. I can only hope that other authors join the current “Back-to-Grimm” movement by sticking to the originals as much as possible, as these ancient tales still have so much to convey to a modern audience. |
