Chancellor Merkel's cabinet on Thursday approved a measure to send Patriot air defense missiles to the Turkish border as part of a NATO mission to contain violence across the border in Syria. Once approved by parliament, the mandate will also allow the 400 German soldiers to be stationed there too.

Has anyone any sensible ideas as to what is happening?
The reasons given do not make sense. I can understand a small contingent of troops to deal with any refugee problems or possible minor border skirmishes but not Patriot missiles. NATO, The Netherlands and the US are providing the missiles so the reason cannot be that secret. Why do Germany and the US keep ‘warning’ Syria not to attack Turkey with chemically loaded missiles? Syria obviously has no intention or the slightest reason to do so, besides Ankara and Istanbul are over 1000 km from Damascus. The false outcry sounds very similar to the one before the offensive against Saddam, but surely this is not similar. The West could not invade Syria, and surely it does not want to. Suggestions anyone? |
