Germany's relationship with Russia has eroded in recent years, with Berlin becoming much more critical of President Vladimir Putin's slow slide into authoritarianism. Ahead of Merkel's Friday arrival in Moscow, however, top Russian officials have ratcheted up the caustic rhetoric.

The Russians are right to the extent that many German politicians like nothing better than pontificating on Human Rights, as if they still have to convince the world, or themselves, that Germany has turned its back on its authoritarian past. Germany too has political prisoners - those incarcerated for questioning parts of the Holocaust story. Leave Russia alone while she finds her footing. Trade and cultural exchange will eventually improve the relationship, as long as politicians can restrain the desire to squeeze a few more votes out of the electorate by taking a high moral stance.
