Using a method known as "fracking," Germany could exploit domestic sources to meet its natural gas needs for 20 years. But safety worries have prompted government authorities to refrain from granting the permits that companies need to use the controversial technique.

The problem is that depending on Russian sources may compromise Germany's ability to operate as a sovereign nation. We in the US have already noticed that changes in how we deal with other nations have been needed to maintain a good trade relationship with China -- and to make sure we can borrow more money there.
It is not impossible that cleaner methods of "fracking" can be used. US firms have resisted that, since it reduces their profits. How much is an independent government worth? |

To my knowledge, no one has proven that fracking in any way harms the environment!
This is just another lame attempt to shut down the petroleum industry in favor of expensive - and not that efficient - Green Energy sources!
