Default Salman Rushdie on Life Under a Fatwa: 'I Insist on the Right to Freedom of Expression

For over a decade, author Salman Rushdie had to live in hiding from Muslim extremists intent on assassinating him in accordance with an Iranian fatwa. SPIEGEL spoke with Rushdie about the trying experience and why he has now chosen to write about it in his new memoir.

Default Salman Rushdie on Life Under a Fatwa: 'I Insist on the Right to Freedom of Expressio

In all the revealed books of important religions it is written that who so ever will attempt to degrade the revealed book or prophet, will face the wrath of God Almighty. After having read the interview I can easily argue that Mr Salma Rushdi is undergoing this wrath of God for degrading a holy book. As for Iranian Fatwa is concerned it is un Islamic and should be condemned. In spite of his degrading remarks he has the right to live his life without fear. However what his inner feelings are he should reconsider his behaviour. Freedom of expression also has a limit as all other liberties have. Why this point is not understood by certain intellectuals I am unable to understand.

In continuation to my previous comment I would also like to point out biased attitude of print and electronic media. Spaniel is no exception to it. Salman is a writer who captured fame due to his anti Islamic stance. Media feels happy to publish him and his ideas to further degrade Islam. Honesty demanded that some one indisputable who preaches love for all and hatred for none and can effectively reply all points raised by Rushdi from real Islamic point of view should also get such coverage. But why should Spiegel do it. As it will portray the beauties of Islam. If it is not so then let us have a test and I suggest a spiritual leader, Mirza Masroor Ahamd, head of Ahamdiyya Muslim Community which has tens of millions of followers in whole world be interviewed and correct perception of Islam on Rushdi points be published. Facilitation of interview can be arranged if consented by Spiegel.
