He was a confidant of Helmut Kohl, almost became chancellor and was struck down by a gunman's bullet. Not many German politicians can look back on a life and a career as dramatic as that of Wolfgang Schäuble, the German finance minister who turned 70 on Tuesday. He is one of the few sane voices in German politics, not pandering to populism when passions are raging higher because of Euro crisis - but the Finance Minister himself has remained sane and balanced. Perhaps Steinmeier from SPD is another who comes to my mind for level headedness
