The Germany democratic system has suffered as a result of the euro crisis, but it has also made fighting the crisis harder. Now it's time to hold a referendum on European integration. Only then will Berlin have the democratic legitimacy it needs to take effective action.

Politicans led us to the edge of disaster.
Now we should choose between Scylla and Charybdis. Wonder who will be to blame afterwards. |

Before a referendum there should be an inquiry about what aspects of the EU are liked and what irks the voters. It may well be that a simple question on the EU yes or no would be heavily influenced by the current difficulties on aid to the needy members.
The voters may very well like the benefits, but dislike the problems. Problems can be solved and a question on EU yes or no will result in the wrong answer. Wrong for Germany and wrong for the EU if the question is formulated as simply yes or no. It may look democratic but in fact is not at all. A better result would be a deepening of the democratic functioning of the European parliament and commission. Improving the functioning of the EU as a whole would be a better outcome than a simple no to a simplistic question. |

Bankers will never be happy until they have the whole of Europe tied up in a unbreakable financial knot and the politicians will gladly agree, after all their miserable jobs will be on the line. It makes me sooooo mad! |
