A striking new museum opens this week in Belfast, the birthplace of the ill-fated Titanic luxury ship. Opening a century after the cruise ship slammed into an iceberg, killing 1,500, the exhibition will recall a tragedy which was long taboo in Northern Ireland's former industrial hub.

Just so we're clear: "Built by Irishmen, Sunk by an Englishman" is only half the story. The Titanic was a disaster waiting to happen right from the start.
Brittle steel, sub-standard rivets, bulkheads that didn't reach all the way up to the deck and of course the catastrophic lack of lifeboats. The proud workers of Belfast certainly had as much of a hand in the loss of life as had the crew that ran the ship into the iceberg. |
