Our political system has become corrupt to the core. We have eroded the protections our political system was given by our revered Founding Fathers (Washington, Jefferson, Madison etc) to the point where now, what Thomas Jefferson feared most, the usurpation of our political system by corporate interests, is nearly complete. This corruption is not limited to the rethuglicans, the Democrats are also in pockets of "big money", but since the rethuglicans historically are pro-business, the focus of big money goes to them. Last year, our Supreme Court ruled that corporations are entitled to the same rights and privileges of people, overthrowing 1500 years of common law. Yes, here in America, a corporation is the same as a person. Money is now equated with speech and as a consequence, our politicians are now bought with "speech". Calling this absurd is an understatement. Our Constitutional right of Freedom of Speech, which was once a source of pride, is now used as a cloak for liars. Fox News here in America (owned by Rupert Murdoch) has used it to cover its lies. A few years ago, when sued for firing a couple of reporters over a story that the giant corporation Monsanto did not like, they did not argue the integrity of their attempts to "rectify" the story. They instead argued that freedom of speech gives them the right to produce any story they like, even if the facts are wrong. Here is a link to a story on the legal ruling http://bit.ly/fhtA86.
America was once the land of the free and the home of the brave. It is now the land of the monied interests and the rest of us chumps. But there is hope. Many Americans, both Democrats and many Republicans see what has happened. That Supreme Court ruling was an eye opener for us and the net results are quite clear; Millions and millions of dollars of "speech" pour into our political system to buy our elected officials. There is a small but growing movement to amend the Constitution to explicitly state that corporations are not people and that money is not speech, thus overturning the court's ruling. Maybe we can have such a referendum on the ballot for next years election. It would be a big step, but I'm sure it would be an even bigger fight. it would only be a start, but at least we are fighting back. I could write a novel rivaling "War and Peace" laying out how the monied interests have undermined our system, but maybe some other time. |

If you have access to Fox News, watch it. They will trash Der Speigel as they do anyone who publishes anything they don't like. |

I am sorry, but you sound like another condescending and racist "liberal". You are justifying British empire by saying that south Asians need to be under a rule of an Euro/American empire. Leave them alone. Stop supplying arms and aid to Pakistan. And they you will see how quickly peace would come. Go and ask any Indian or Pakistani about who they blame the most for the partition-related losses. You will hear "British". And correctly so, as the British empire used dirty politics to instigate religious tensions during the partition. Look at the three countries, India, Pakistan and Afghanistan, and will find that most US-friendly populace are in India. Guess what, India has NO US troops stationed. The moment you put US troops in India, you will see how quickly the US-friendliness drops down there. They would not like it one bit. |
